I've never had a problem with Frontline, except that after applying it to my dogs' (both Hildy and Abby) skin, they would be lethargic for a day or two.

Still, I became worried after reading about health issues related to several of the prescription flea medications a few years ago. I don't really know much about the holistic or homeopathic remedies, but I did have an experience once that kind of turned me off to them (however unjustifiably). What happened is I bought a padded dog collar filled with herbs and such -- the smell was so intense, I just couldn't take it, and Hildy, my wonder dog then, couldn't stand being around herself either. So I eventually tossed the collar. I'd sure like to hear about successes with non-pharmaceutical flea repellents that work and I'll be checking back to see if anyone writes about them.

My own personal experience is that fleas are not really very active in my neck of the woods (Rochester NY-the Northeast) until the end of July. So starting a couple years ago I delayed starting the flea meds sometimes until July, sometimes June--depending upon what I hear about how bad the fleas are going to be that year (if I hear).

Also, I felt like half of the medicine ended up on my dog's fur and not on her skin, so about two years ago, I started giving Abby just one-half of a vial rather than the whole thing and I carefully apply it so it does go on her skin and not her coat. I tape up the other half then put it in a plastic sealable baggie, and store it in the refrigerator for the next month.

This works for me...or I should say for Abby, the best dog in the whole world.
